Young Brave Studio
I’ve spent the last couple of years using my time off from touring to build a killer recording facility in my home in Florida. The ultimate goal was to design a room where I could handle virtually any recording project with the highest quality signal path. Due to space limitations, the only thing I can’t do here is record a live drum kit. Due to my increased involvement in film scoring, I also wanted the facility to have full video/audio synchronization, with advanced monitoring and surround sound mixing capabilities. The studio is set up in a circular fashion to be an optimally ergonomic workstation for one person. The signal path starts with a variety of world-class microphones from Neumann, Shure, RØDE, and AKG. Signals can be fed to an assortment of tube and solid-state mic-preamps, including a pair of Avalon 737s as well as solid-state devices from Millennia, DBX, and Trace Elliot. From there, analog signal is converted to digital via Apogee 24-bit cards in a Yamaha 02R digital mixing console. Digital transfer to my computer is through a variety of digital I/O boxes from MOTU. Recordings are stored on a Seagate Ultra 160 hard disk running at 10,000 RPM and accessed via Emagic’s Logic Audio Platinum. In all, I have capability of up to 64 audio tracks and unlimited MIDI tracks with full dynamic automation. In addition, video sync is possible via a pair of Sony Professional SVHS time code decks. I can sync in a variety of formats including LTC, VITC, Blackburst, and MIDI time code. The entire room is wired with Studio Pro 1000 and M1000 series silver digital cable from Monster. I have a variety of audio reference monitors from Westlake Audio, Yamaha, Boston Acoustics, and Sony Professional. Surround mixing is accomplished with the Yamaha 02R console and monitored via a Sony STR-DE935 surround amp. Video monitoring is via a 32" Sony Wega flat CRT monitor. Since I’ve become more involved in composing music for film, I’ve needed to rely on keyboards and samples for composing. The studio’s main MIDI device is an 88-key Korg Triton Pro-X. The samples in the keyboard are absolutely amazing. The drum sounds are so real it’s scary! I made a conscious effort not to clutter the room with too many keyboards and sound modules. For this reason, the Triton is the only keyboard I have. All other sounds are stored on the hard drive and accessed by the Triton using the Nemesys GigaSampler. This software allows you to load tons of huge sample sounds in seconds. Included in my list of samples are the famed Miroslav orchestral samples. If you can tell the difference between these samples and a real orchestra, I’ll buy you a ticket to the symphony of your choice! All MIDI I/O is managed by the MOTU timepiece and edited/scored via Logic Audio Platinum. I’m always on the lookout for new talent. If you would like to take your recording to the next level and are looking for a place to cut your next album, I would like to hear from you! Since my studio is not designed as a commercial facility, I’m limiting outside projects to those that I’m interested in producing. I’m particularly interested in producing instrumental music and singer-songwriter projects for non-national artists who desire to take it to the next level. If you like my production values, or are simply looking for a brand new sound or direction, please email me at rob@robeberhardyoung.com. |
