Potato Taco
I thought I would relate a funny story of how the phrase “potato taco, no cheese” came about, which I submitted as a great title for a future Michael Manring bass solo. It is no secret that Michael is extremely careful about his eating habits. The Manthing has a history of heart related illness in his family and doesn’t take it lightly. This is not to say that because he eats “clean” that he eats little. In fact, I have seen him ingest more than twice his total body weight on more than one occasion…hey, that’s about 40 pounds of food! Anyway, Michael was in Santa Fe, New Mexico with me while working on my new album at Kip Wingers house. After a particularly grueling day in the studio, we all decided to take a late lunch break. We head down the mountain to this great little general store/restaurant called Tesuque Village Market…if any of you are ever in the area, it is definitely worth the drive up the hill…the food is amazing! So we all sit down and start reading the menus. What makes this particularly funny is the contrast between Michael and the rest of us. The waitress is going around the table taking our orders…Kip orders green chile and pork fat stew, my tech and second engineer Marc orders “the biggest burger you have” with extra cheese and bacon, and I order a fried porterhouse steak, baked potato with butter and sour cream and a side of cheddar cheese soup while smoking a Marlboro red and drinking a Bass Ale!!! Finally, the waitress comes around to Michael…At this point, I’m already starting to laugh because he has that little smile on his face which is saying both “I can’t believe what you guys are all eating…you’re gonna die...and wait till’ you see what I order……” From past experience with him I’m half expecting him to say: “Bring me a raw oak branch, bark on, no leaves and a side of wheat grass soup, no salt, no oil and a spring water...” Instead he says in a very quiet, unassuming voice, “potato taco, no cheese”. I don’t know, maybe you had to be there, but it was just the funniest thing ever. Anyway, there it is. I’m going back into my studio now…I’m working on a new solo guitar piece called “Greasy Steak and a Marlboro Red”. |
